[DJ] Featured Music Artist Profile -- Kid Suicide

Kid Suicide

He is as versatile as he is unpredictable and talented. His sets are a woven tapestry of anything and everything alternative- simultaneously both overtly underground and unashamedly commercial.

The Kid is renowned for winning over crowds from all walks of life and sides of the genre divides- from metal, hardcore and hard rock through to emo, punk and industrial! His message is simple: burn the genre police- the kid is here to rock the party and fuck your sister!

The living embodiment of a walking contradiction; Kid Suicide is an unanswered riddle left to rot in the fevered Australian summer sun. Part deejay, part performer, part rock star, part mental defective and 100% professional loser, the one they call Kid Suicide has taken Melbourne by blitzkrieg since first bringing his own brand of homebrewed rage to the decks in 2005.

In only twelve short months the Kid has emerged as Melbourne's favourite new "alternative" talent having spun alongside the likes of Slipknot's Sid#0, Hatebreed's Jamie Jasta & Sean Martin, Bodycount's Afrika Islam, Frenzal Rhomb's Astronaut and the great Public Enemy to name but an immortal few. In just a short time Kid Suicide has left his indelible mark on a range of Melbourne institutions including a weekly residency at Bang & Next plus regular guest appearances @ DV8, Plastic, Pharmacy event and Two Tribes. The Kid (as they called him in teh ghettos) was even booked to open for guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen at The Palace!!

Q. What's your non-DJing name?

A. Kid Suicide IS my real name- you must understand that my parents are hateful creatures!

Q. Do you have a day job and if so, what do you do?

A. Part deejay, part performer, part rock star, part mental defective and 100% professional loser.

Q. Where did you grow up?

A. Christchurch, New Zealand. Proper hillbilly!

Q. Do you play any other musical instruments?

A. I play the skin flute once in a while, but otherwise nothing much to speak of!

Q. What made you want to be a DJ?

A. The allure of sex, drugs and rock n roll went a long way- the rest was divine providence.

Q. Are those things still important to you or do you have a new perspective on the industry now that you have been in it for a while?

A. Nope- still striving for that famous rock n roll death. I only have one year left to kick it with the '27 club'.

Q. Did you have any goals when you entered the business, and if so, do you believe you have achieved any of those initial goals?

A. Nope- I just bought the ticket and took the ride.

Q. Who are/were the biggest influences on your DJing?

A. Dexter- the mashup king, DJ Starscream (Slipknot), Molly Meldrum, Mr Hahn, Robyn Fink and those clown dudes- Zig and Zag!

Q. What was your first gig and how did you feel the first time you stood behind the decks and saw the audience dance to your music?

A. LOL! My first gig was at Pharmacy- I cleared the floor within two tracks! That's what I call a steep learning curve!

Q. Was it what you expected?

A. Pretty much. LOL!

Q. If you had the power to do so, is there anything you would change about raves and clubs as they are at the moment?

A. I would like to see people open their minds to a wider range of music- genre purists can go fuck themselves. There is a world of music out there and yet people get stuck within the smallest paradigms of sound. Crazy!

Q. What do you feel have been your biggest achievements over the time you have been DJing?

A. Playing a metal/dance mashup set @ Two Tribes was fun!

Q. What style of music do you enjoy DJing to and why?

A. Metal, nu rave, punk, acid, industrial, house, jazz, bagpipe trance- if it is good I'll play it (badly!)...

Q. How would you describe your style?

A. French neo-punk ghetto metal house with a twist of coq roq pastiche!

Q. What makes you an exceptional DJ?

A. Well, I jump around like a retarded muppet with haemorrhoids- I figure if I move around enough people might get distracted and ignore the fact I am in-fact the worst deejay on the planet besides that DJ d00d they had on Neighbours for a while!

Q. Who is an artist you admire that your audience wouldn't expect?

A. I really dig Avril Lavigne- her production outfit (The Matrix) are dope! I LOVE daggy music though- the more uncool the better! Especially covers- I have a real penchant for covers- stuff like 'Me First & The Gimmie Gimmies' and Richard Cheese!

Q. What's the strangest thing that has happened to you at one of your gigs?

A. I have been glassed for not playing a request for some bogan that wanted me to play his band's new tune- awesome fun!

Q. Do you have any advice for someone wanting to enter the industry?

A. Get a real job- either that or learn to suck cock like a cowboy!

Q. Do you have any parting words for your audience?

A. Yeah- just because you are paranoid doesn't mean that they're not after you!
